Eeek I forgot to apply for my student loan!

As young women, we owe it to ourselves to have at least a basic understanding of things like credit, hire purchase, student loans and tax – because it’s not something we learn in school! Which is why we’ve hooked you up with Laura Tighe from SavY. She’s 24/7 Girl’s new money guru – and she’s here to dish out advice and answers to your questions.

Laura – I need to apply for a student loan, but Studylink seems beyond confusing, what do I need to do and by when to make sure my student loan comes through? Olivia.
Hey Olivia, dealing with Studylink can sometimes seem a bit daunting. First things first, you need to apply AT LEAST 21 days in advance, so given that university starts on March 1st, that means you need to get your application in no later than the 7th of February. However, it is always a good idea to get it started earlier to allow for any hiccups along the way. Here’s a quick list of what you’re going to need in order to complete the process.
• Your passport or other proof of New Zealand Citizenship or Permanent Residence.
• Your student ID number from your University or tertiary institution.
• Your course start and end dates - these don’t need to be exact.
• Your Inland Revenue number (you can confirm your number with Inland Revenue on 0800 22 77 74).
• Your bank account details.
• Your contact details - phone, mobile, fax.
If you’re still having problems it can always be useful to just go and have a chat to them or to call them – Studylink have offices in most major NZ universities. The key is to get talking to them now as their busiest times are mid February, so you don’t want to be waiting in a queue for hours on end just to clarify a couple of things! Always check the FAQ on the Studylink website beforehand as well as this could save you a lot of time and effort standing in a queue or sitting on your phone listening to music while on hold!
