Money Smarts

As young women, we owe it to ourselves to have at least a basic understanding of things like credit, hire purchase, student loans and tax – because it’s not something we learn in school! Which is why we’ve hooked you up with Laura Tighe from SavY. She’s 24/7 Girl’s new money guru – and she’s here to dish out advice and answers to your questions.

MoneyHi Girls

I hope you’ve all had an amazing summer! We’ve had such awesome weather, the start to a new decade, and an epic Big Day Out! I know that a lot of you have made New Year’s resolutions, and I can imagine that just like mine, a few of them have started to fall by the wayside already! So without trying to sound like too much of a wet blanket, I’d love to remind you guys that the beginning of the year is the absolute best time to set some realistic and attainable financial goals, and a great opportunity to get in control of your finances. So now you’re enrolled for university, we are going to need to get prepared!

Fact: For most people, especially those of us in big cities, a student allowance simply isn’t going to be enough to cover the cost of food and accommodation – even with an accommodation supplement it can still be rather hairy, so we always need to be on the lookout for extra sources of $$$.

So how much is it going to cost?

Often people are very deceived by how much going to uni will cost them – text books can cost over $1000 dollars per year, so when you combine this with course books, stationery, transport costs like bus passes and petrol and the cost of eating during the day at university, the cost of surviving at university can quickly seem to become unmanageable. And this is all before we start to have any fun!

There are so many opportunities at university, both social (like balls, parties and sporting competitions), and academic (competitions, and clubs), and you don’t want to miss out on these because you’re always broke.

5 ways to stretch your student $$

Tip: Start taking advantage of student discounts and bargain ways to get what you want!

1. Get your student bus pass which can be up to 40% cheaper

2. Get second hand text books which are less than half the cost of new ones.

3. Wake up 10 minutes early so you can pack your lunch

4. Use your student status to get discounts on everything from going to the cinema to dealing with account fees at the bank

5. Getting course related costs added to your student loan isn’t a bad idea either, however still go for second hand textbooks as you will have to pay this $$ back.
