Living up to expectations
I’m really not looking forward to going back to Uni this year. I’m doing business studies and it’s so boring. My parents want me to eventually take over the family business but I want to do an arts degree instead. I’m not sure how to tell them. I feel like I’m letting them down.

One of my friends applied for Medicine last year, and the dean of the faculty gave them a talk about their applications. At the end of the talk he told them to make sure that medicine was what they all really wanted to do, as it’s a lifelong commitment. He then told them a story about a guy who had gotten pretty much straight A’s throughout the entire year, and looked like a shoo-in for Med school. However, during the interview when they asked him “how would your friends describe your best qualities?” he shrugged and said “they’d say I’ve got a pretty hot sister!”. Turns out, this guy had been pushed to do Medicine by his parents, and he really didn’t want to do it himself!
You need to make yourself happy
The point is, if you end up doing something that you really don’t want to be doing, down the line you’re just going to be miserable. You need to let your parents know that Business isn’t for you right now. This is YOUR career, not theirs. It’s up to you to make your own life decisions, no matter what your parents might think about it.
An alternative
If you really don’t want to disappoint your parents, have you considered doing a conjoint? A conjoint degree allows you to get two undergraduate bachelors degrees at the same time. It might be worth talking to your university about whether you are able to do a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business conjoint. This way you can keep the peace with your parents, while also setting yourself up to do what you really want to be doing. Sarah xx
