Land your dream job!

Job interviewInterviewing for a new job can be a scary process. Even if you’re totally confident about your ability to handle the role, if you don’t make a good impression in your interview you might not get a chance to prove it.

There will always be variables you can’t control, but by nailing the basics you’ll be able to walk away knowing you did yourself proud!

Before the interview.

Do your homework. Find out as much about the company as you can, and the job you’re applying for. It’s important to walk into an interview confident you’re a fit for the role, and that the role’s a fit for you.

Error check your CV. It’s incredible how many people hand over CVs that are FULL of mistakes. Taking 30 seconds to check yours could be the difference between you being considered for a job or not - seriously.

Note: computer spellchecks aren’t 100% reliable, it always pays to have someone else look over the document too.

Practise. Find a list of questions employers typically ask when interviewing (what your strengths and weakness are, why you’re a good fit for the role, what you expect from an employer etc.), and think about how you’ll answer them if asked. You’ll be less likely to get flustered and will know you’ve said what you really want to say.

On the day.

Dress appropriately. How we dress says a lot about who we are - it also says a lot about our understanding of the company we want to be a part of and the job we want.

Tidy up. Wash your hair, file your nails, blow your nose - you don’t have to go to extremes but you don’t want the interviewer focussing on a stain on your shirt or that piece of ham in your teeth. You want them to focus on you!

Don’t forget: this could be the one and only opportunity you get to communicate who you are and why you’re a perfect fit for the job. It’s so important to make a good impression!

Ok, onto the interview itself. It’s important to be confident about your ability to do the job (if you aren’t no one else will buy it!). A lot of people find this difficult, but it isn’t arrogant to be self assured. Focus on your strong points and acknowledge areas of weakness without being negative about your abilities overall.

There are many ways we communicate - what we say is only one part of the picture!

You’re likely to be at least a little nervy going into an interview but be aware of your body language and try to relax! Smile and make eye contact - and try not to think about how nervous you are! Even nodding and asking questions where appropriate will show you’re interested and enthusiastic about the role.

Be careful when it comes to money talk because you don’t want to either sell yourself short, or ask for a pay rate that’s unrealistically high. Find out what a reasonable asking rate would be before the interview by talking to people in similar roles, and let your potential employer bring up the issue of pay if possible. It’ll mean you’re in a better position to negotiate if you feel the rate they offer is too low!

Tip: don’t get too pushy about pay on the first interview - you don’t want to scare a potential employer off!

After the interview.

It’s not over until they tell you it’s over! You could be one of many applicants, and a good way of making sure you stand out in the crowd is to follow up your interview with a phone call or email. Keep it short, but thank them for meeting with you and reaffirm the fact you’d love the job, and why you think you’d be a good fit.
