Beating Bulimia
For five months or so I have been making myself throw up after every meal. A few weeks ago I threw up blood. I’ve also completely stopped eating. What’s wrong with me?

Making yourself vomit after meals is an eating disorder known as bulimia. For you, it’s begun to have some serious consequences. My advice is to get medical attention immediately. Blood in your vomit could indicate that your excessive vomiting is starting to cause the lining of the oesophagus (the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach) to tear and bleed. Bulimia can also cause stomach ulcers, which if left untreated can cause your stomach to rupture, and that can damage your internal systems A LOT. Other medical conditions which can come up as a result of bulimia include tooth decay, enlarged salivary glands and a potassium imbalance, which can in turn lead to abnormal heart rhythms and heart failure. If you continue this behaviour you are at serious risk of a heart attack.
Can be a sign of unhappiness
Eating disorders are almost always a sign of underlying unhappiness; I’m willing to bet that underneath it all you’re feeling down about yourself right now. People with eating disorders usually feel unhappy with the way they look, their career or life in general, and start to engage in behaviour such as food restriction, vomiting and excessive exercise, to gain some element of control. These thoughts can often become an obsession, to the point of causing physical and mental harm.
Ask for help
You need to reach out and ask for help before you end up starving yourself to death. Literally. Talk to a friend or a trusted adult, be honest and let them know how you’re feeling. If talking to someone face to face is a bit too scary, try phoning Kids Help Line on 1800 55 1800. Eating disorders are incredibly dangerous and I urge you to talk to someone as soon as possible. And you should definitely make an appointment with a doctor, otherwise you could end up with some serious health problems. Sarah xx
