Dealing with conflict at work
SavY Girls: Working, working, working - Part Two
If anyone has ever experienced conflict in the workplace you’ll understand that this is a massive issue. These conflicts can escalate very quickly - let’s face it, whenever money is involved people seem to get aggressive pretty fast, especially when one person is trying to get money from another. Because of the delicate nature of these conflicts you need to learn to handle them in a positive manner.
Tip: Never be scared to stand up for your rights. However you do need to treat things delicately and systematically. This is especially the case for workers in their teens and twenties. We often fall in the new “90 day probation” law which makes it easier for small business owners to fire you with less recourse if you’ve been there for less than 90 days.
Sometimes things can happen at work and you’ll be faced with a choice. Your boss might not of paid you for all the hours you worked last week, or not paid you time and a half for working on a public holiday. In some cases you might even think your employer has acted unfairly, or hasn’t prevented something unfair happening - this could be something as serious as sexual harassment. First, check your facts. Visit www.dol.govt.nz or contact the Department of Labour on 0800 20 90 20 to find out your rights and obligations, and what to do. You should at least try talking about the problem with your employer. You might want to take a family member, or a friend to support you.
If you and your employer can’t resolve the problem by talking, you or your employer can ask the Department of Labour for assistance to help sort things out. A mediator or a labour inspector may be able to help.
