So you wanna be…an Interactive Planning Manager?
Julia Simon
Interactive Planning Manager
Food Network
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m the Interactive Planning Manager at Food Network.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Mostly devising and maintaining promotional plans for the website. If it’s September (Autumn/‘Fall’ in America!), I know that I need to have apples, beets and sweet potatoes all over the place. Or if there is a big TV event, I need a strategy for getting as many eyeballs on the website to watch it as possible. It’s one big balancing act. I also help manage the process behind creating and editing content for all things food (holiday feasts, party bites, regular old weeknight meals, etc.)
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. I get to be an incessant scheduler, which is one thing I love to do (you should see my daily organiser). I also get to be creative editorially.
Q. Any downsides?
A. One would think I’d get more free food than I do!
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I started out in magazines, first as a web producer where I got to learn how sites are built and maintained, then as an editor, which was much more creatively fulfilling. Now my position, in a way, combines these two experiences into a strategy role.
Q. What kind of work do you do as a freelancer?
A. One of my previous jobs was at a music magazine, so I still do some of that kind of writing. It can be rough to go home after work just to do more work, but it’s what allows me to keep up with my passion. You’ll be hard pressed to find me without my earphones firmly in place.
Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. I studied English in college, and while I don’t think that particular degree was necessary for my current gig, I do know that it’s what began charting my career path.
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. General open-mindedness.
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. Focus on controlling what you can control and let the other stuff go; seek out trustworthy people (we all need support and confidantes); explore every opportunity you get to expose yourself to the career field you want to go into.
