So you wanna be…a Tutor?

Sarah GibsonSarah Gibson
University Tutor
Auckland University

Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I am a limited term tutor for the philosophy department at Auckland University.

Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.

A. At Auckland Uni students attend lectures and tutorials. Tutorials are smaller classes based on discussion. I take four tutorials a week. On a typical day I might spend the morning working on tutorial plans, then have an office hour when students can come see me with questions they have about the course. In the afternoon I’ll take a class and maybe do some essay marking.

Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. I love being continuously surrounded by interesting ideas and people.

Q. Any downsides?
A. Not that I’ve come across yet - it can be hard work at times, but it’s a good kind of hard work.

Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I previously studied politics and philosophy at Auckland Uni. This year I’m taking a break from studying, so I applied for a tutoring position and was accepted.

Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. You do need to study to be a tutor. I did three years of undergraduate study and then an honours year. Incidentally… I never finished high school, but I loved studying at university!

Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. I admire an open mind - a willingness to challenge your own beliefs and opinions makes for an interesting person who can think for themselves and listen to other peoples’ points of view. I also love to be around people with a compassionate heart who are able to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and show genuine empathy for the difficulties others face in their lives. Finally, one of my favourite qualities is authenticity - people are always most attractive when they are true to themselves. If you can find out who you are and be comfortable in your own skin life is much more enjoyable.

Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. 1. Try a bunch of things you’re into and see what fits best for you.

2. When you do find that thing you’re really passionate about, stick to your guns; don’t let setbacks get you down or make you give up on your goals.

3. Don’t worry too much about the future - when you work hard at something you love things tend to work out.

How do you keep your students focused? I would be stressed with all the marking and tutoring.
