So you wanna be a Yoga Teacher?

Yoga teacherMartina Gotz
Yoga teacher

Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m a Yoga teacher at Auckland Yoga Academy (www.yoga.co.nz)

Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Each day varies a little, but a fairly standard day would look something like this:

6:00-8:30am My own yoga practice.

9:30-10:30am Office work (emails, bookkeeping, phone calls, prep for 1 on 1 sessions and classes).

10:30-11:30am Take 1 on 1 yoga session.

12 noon Teach yoga class.

1pm Teach yoga class.

4pm–7:30pm Three massages (my other job! quite difficult to make a living purely teaching yoga, plus I like a little variety - it’s good for one’s perspective).

Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. Seeing the positive changes in student/client wellbeing, body and mind.

Q. Any downsides?
A. Politics… they are in every profession, even yoga teaching! Often working after hours, early mornings, nights and weekends - especially when you first start.

Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I have been involved in movement most of my life in some form or another, primarily gymnastics as a child and teenager. When I became an adult I wanted to be involved with some form of movement that was sustainable and fit with the rest of my life - I found yoga is perfect!

Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. Yes I have done lots of study and continue to do so now; I go to India every year for a month or so to practice and study at the source of yoga. I think this ongoing education is really important as a teacher to recharge, be inspired and to be purely in the role of a student again for a while. Though you don’t have to do any specific study to teach yoga in NZ yet, any study you do will make you a better, safer, more confident teacher - and therefore more successful!

My training so far includes: six months part time yoga teacher training with Stress Less Yoga and four years doing part time yoga apprenticeships at the Yoga Academy (this has now changed - the Yoga Academy now offer a comprehensive part time yoga teacher training course, check it out on http://www.yoga.co.nz), as well as numerous other short courses. I also did a Diploma in Natural Therapeutics (three years full time), which has been useful with my yoga teaching.

Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Open mindedness and good communication skills.

Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. 1. If you’re not sure what you want to do career-wise, try something your interested in - it’s better than doing nothing and you don’t have to stick with it forever if it isn’t right for you. At the very least, you’ll learn what you don’t want to do and gain a better idea of what you might like to do.

2. Strive for balance with work/study and leisure/relaxation.

3. Take care of yourself by eating well and exercising.
