So you wanna be a Promotions Coordinator?

Promotions Coordinator - Shock Records
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m the Promotions Coordinator at Shock Records, an indie record label located on my favourite street - K’Rd (in Auckland)!
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. I go through the new music videos and decide which ones to take to TV. Then I write up release sheets and do the rounds of C4, Juice TV, MTV and ALT. I make CD samplers and send them to regional radio, and meet with digital providers to get our music online. If Shock bands are touring NZ, I organise TV interviews for them. I also have a lot of reports to fill out!
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. Shock is a great company with great people and great music. I like working for a company that I believe in.
Q. Any downsides?
A. Just the usual downsides of full-time work! The biggest one is not having enough time to focus more on my own music.
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. Through a very circuitous route! I started out as a playwright and gradually became more interested in writing music. I performed in bands and organised gigs for a few years, and then decided to bite the bullet and get a real job - as a receptionist at SonyBMG. Being a receptionist wasn’t really for me, and I was lucky enough to be able to make the move to Shock. I started off as product coordinator here, and have recently moved into the exciting world of promotions.
Q. Did you study/did you need to study?
A. I studied writing and directing at UNITEC, and also have an MA in writing from Victoria Uni. If you’re interested in working in the music industry it would be more sensible to do a Bachelor of Communications.
Q. What qualities do you most admire in a person?
A. Honesty, loyalty and integrity. I think we’re at a real crisis point in terms of the environment, and I respect people who are taking action to make the small changes in their own lives that will make a difference for the future. I also admire people who are patient, chilled and relaxed - because I don’t possess any of those qualities yet!
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. 1. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion, regardless of how hard it may be.
2. If you’re serious about entering a particular industry, get an internship at a relevant company while you study. Even if you’re just photocopying and getting coffees, the reference you get will open doors.
3. Start a savings account right now! Even ten bucks a week in a high interest account will give you a lot more flexibility later on.
