Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I’m the Creative Director of my own company, aplural, and I work in my design studio in the East Village, NYC.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a rundown of what you do in a typical day.
A. I run my own design company called aplural (www.aplural.com) and I’m also part of a design collective called corpus (www.corpusnyc.com). Every day is different for me so, it’s hard to describe a typical day - but it usually involves chatting with clients, designing websites, collaborating with the folks in the studio and coffee breaks.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. The best thing about my job is that I get to choose my own hours and create a schedule that works with my lifestyle. That’s the beauty of working for yourself! I also have had the opportunity to work with some great clients, like Sesame Street.
Q. Any downsides?
A. Sometimes projects can be a crammer, so there are some long days, but I think that’s just how it goes in this field.
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I had a great graphic design professor in college who really pushed me. Through that time I realised how powerful design can be. Design is all around you - TV commercials, cereal boxes, store signs, clothes…the list goes on. Everything is thought about before a product is put there in front of you.
Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. I received a BA in Graphic Design at Loyola University in New Orleans. I definitely think learning the essentials in design in college helped me become the designer I am today. There were weeks where I might have slept five hours total because I was working on a deadline for a typography class. Thinking about it now sounds crazy, but all that hard work definitely paid off. Design isn’t easy and it really takes a lot of patience to understand how it works. Studying design was very important and I would recommend it for anyone wanting to go into design. You just learn a ton.
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. I really admire strong and passionate people, people who are true to themselves and who are go getters. It’s too often you hear people saying that they wish they would have done this or that.
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
1. Stick to your gut.
2. Do what you say you’re going to do.
3. Don’t give up.
