So you wanna be… a Stylist Assistant?
Dorothea Lucaci
Freelance Stylist Assistant
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. My job title is Stylist Assistant. I work freelance, which means I have the opportunity to work with a lot of different magazines, and also the option of choosing my schedules according to my availability and all my other commitments.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Well, it all starts with the idea, which is the ‘fashion story’, then a collaboration with photographer, make-up artist, hair stylist and - most importantly - securing the interest of a magazine. Once you’ve pitched the ‘story’, and they’re interested in using it for an upcoming issue, you plan a date to shoot and contact the fashion houses to pull clothes from their collections - that’s where I come in. I generally help with picking up clothes/shoes/accessories from various fashion houses and showrooms around Manhattan, then on the day of the shoot I work with the stylist to arrange the different looks. Generally we do around eight looks on one or two models for each shoot. I dress and help style, and also steam the clothes and try and keep track of what items were used for which look.
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. The best part is when we have everything laid out in the studio or on location, and we can play around with all the clothes! Also, seeing the finished look on the model - with hair and make up done.
Q. Any downsides?
A. Returning everything!
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I replied to some ads, contacted a few stylists by email. Mostly it comes down to word of mouth and who you know, so it’s important to network.
Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. I didn’t study, but a lot of people I’ve worked with have studied. I had a strong background in fashion prior to styling which helped, but mostly I just fell into it. I was fortunate to work with some great people from the get-go, who really made things happen.
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Mostly I admire people with no inhibitions, who don’t fear failure, and who are willing to express their creativity without feeling the need to tone it down, or conform. They’re usually at the cutting edge. I like people who make things happen.
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. Dream big. Take every opportunity. And never underestimate yourself.
