So you wanna be…a NYC advertising exec?

Jo HardyName: Jo Hardy
Age: 30
Job: Account Supervisor

Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A.
Account Supervisor, Saatchi & Saatchi, New York (woohoo! It’s a dream job).

Q. What does your job involve? Give us a rundown of what you do in a typical day.
A. Take the subway to work, squished up against New Yorkers…grab a coffee…check emails and talk on the phone, but really it’s all about project management: managing expectations of our clients, managing timelines and finances, managing creative teams and, ultimately, seeing jobs through from start (a client brief) to finish (a TV/print ad).

I once heard my job described as being similar to that of a ‘magician’, which is cool. To our clients, we are the face of the agency - working with them to magically transform their marketing briefs into amazing creative work that works. Along the way, we need to influence the people we work with - so getting on well with people (including really listening and communicating with them), is a major part of our role.

Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. Every day is different, and every day you get to work alongside talented, creative people!

Q. Any downsides?
A. There are some ‘boring’ parts to our job - like time and financial management, but I actually really enjoy those parts too! Another major downside is sometimes having to be the bad guy. For example, if the client doesn’t like the fabulous work our creative team has created, we need to phrase it to the creatives so that it’s constructive, rather than negative and disheartening.

Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I studied in Dunedin at Otago Uni and did everything I could that might be related to advertising. I was a DJ on Radio One (a local radio station, where I hosted shows and voiced ads), did every marketing job I could get my hands on at Student Job Search (including handing out flyers, sampling new products and market research), did a marketing degree (BCom), and then a Masters of Business Studies majoring in Advertising (which included completing a thesis in conjunction with Colenso BBDO, a top ad agency in Auckland). I was just so commited to working in an advertising agency that I wanted to make sure I would stand out in comparison to anyone else interviewing for my position! It worked for me, but there are plenty of other ways to get into advertising too.

Q. Did you study / do you need to study?
A. While a degree is helpful (especially to get your first interview), you absolutely don’t need a marketing or advertising degree to work in advertising. You just need to be passionate about advertising and know how to express yourself and communicate well. A degree (of any kind) helps, as it’s where you really learn to formulate an argument and how to express and articulate yourself, although I do know really successful people in advertising who have a natural talent, and therefore have succeeded without a degree.

Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A.
The ability to not take life too seriously and to dream the impossible.

Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
A. Remember to enjoy every day and believe in yourself. Know what you want and go for it! No matter what anyone says, or any beliefs that might be holding you back, never give up. In other words, dream the most impossible, most amazing thing imaginable, and you’ll be surprised at what you get!
