So you wanna be…a Dietician and Nutritionist?
Claire Turnbull
Dietician and Nutritionist
Q. What’s your job title and where do you work?
A. I am a dietitian and a nutritionist. I run my own business, called Mission Nutrition, and I help people to eat well, perform better and feel incredible! I work between the North Shore and Newmarket and travel all ‘round NZ too.
Q. What does your job involve? Give us a run down of what you do in a typical day.
A. Wow! Now that’s a question! My job is hugely varied and I don’t really have a ‘usual’ day. I run clinics and see people [one on one], setting out nutrition plans and helping them lose weight, gain muscle and manage emotional eating, as well as seeing people [to offer advice about] sports nutrition, eating disorders, diabetes and pregnancy. As well as clinics, I run nutrition seminars, supermarket tours and go into peoples’ workplaces to make over their staff canteens and office snack draws!
I am also the nutritionist for the Healthy Food Guide magazine, so I write for them and do TV and radio interviews. I also work for North Harbour Rugby so manage 40 strapping rugby boys…I think that’s work?!
Q. What’s the best thing about your job?
A. Seeing the results when people make changes to their lives and feel fantastic! Also, being an inspiration to others. Nothing is better!
Q. Any downsides?
A. Long hours - because I work for myself! And admin…that comes with any job.
Q. How did you get into your field of work?
A. I went to uni for four years in the UK and studied Nutrition and Dietetics full time. In NZ you would need to complete a three year Nutrition undergraduate degree and, if you are really keen, head to Otago to study to be a dietitian!
Q. What qualities do you admire most in a person?
A. Commitment, determination and passion! We all make mistakes and things might not always go your way; the strength of a really AMAZING person is [being able to] pick yourself up, learn from what has happened and be an even stronger person as a result!
Q. Can you pass on three tips for success to teenage girls?
1. Dreams so come true - never give up.
2. Learn about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses. You are the best friend you can ever have.
3. Remember, what goes around comes around…give it your all and you will get A LOT back!
Good luck.
