Why comparing yourself to others ends in tears!

Do you feel happy with your life, until you look at someone else’s? It’s an easy trap to fall into!

Comparing…Us humans seem to be obsessed with measuring up to other peoples’ standards - yet so often we feel like we fall short. Some people need that sense of competition to motivate them to do well in life - but if our self worth depends on whether we ‘win’ or ‘lose’, it makes it really hard to be happy.

Needing to be the best all the time is stressful! How can we quit comparing ourselves to other people, and be content with who we are?

It’s lose lose!
Using other people to measure your self worth can mean you never quite feel good enough. Even if you do well at something, it can still be tempting to look at people who are doing even better and feel unsatisfied. Other people may see you as a really talented, successful person, but inside you might still feel like a failure. Instead of being down on yourself for not measuring up, take time out to focus on what you do like about yourself.

We all have strengths, and we all have weaknesses. Some people find writing essays really easy, for example, while other people suck at writing - but are great at art! Don’t see a weakness as a failure, consider it a challenge.

I wish I was as pretty as her!
Insecurities about how we look can be really hard to overcome - especially if you have heaps of amazing, beautiful friends! True beauty is about individuality though: we’re all unique, with our own sense of style - cultivate yours!

Remember: All those fashion magazines edit out imperfections - we can’t airbrush in real life, and why should we?! Turn your supposed ‘flaws’ into features!

You’re one in a million
Here are some tips to help you avoid comparing yourself to other people - and feeling like you don’t measure up!

Create your own ‘ruler’. Whether it’s the job you want, how you want to look or the kind of guy you want to go out with - think about what you want, and why. When other
people succeed and you feel like you don’t measure up, think back to your own, personalised ‘ruler’, to see how you’re doing - according to that.

Focus on your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses. I don’t mean we should give up on things we aren’t naturally good at, but life’s to short to spend it trying to be something we’re not! Why waste time trying to be a dancer when you’re a photographer at heart? Put that energy into something you love!

Work with other people. When we play a team sport we all have different roles depending on our strengths. Life is the same! Instead of feeling down because you aren’t as good at something as your bestie, let it be an opportunity to help each other out - there’ll be something you’re better at than her, I’m sure!

The only person we should measure ourselves against is ourselves. That’s not to say we shouldn’t aspire to be like people we admire, just that we shouldn’t base our self worth on whether we’re ‘better’ or ‘worse’ than someone else.

You may have similar goals to your friends, but everyone walks a different path in life, and we’re the only ones who can walk our own from start to finish. Don’t flounder trying to be something you’re not - be the best YOU you can be!

My bestfriend and I are so similar its really hard not to compare things to her, not looks but usually assignments and stuff. I know its really stupid, but we know we are like that and help each other out, people call us perfectionists but I don’t think we are.
