So you’re not a big drinker?
It’s easy enough to know your own mind… when you’re on your own.
Involve your mates though, and the simplest decisions can all of a sudden be really hard to make! You thought you knew what you wanted, but when everyone else is saying ‘yes’, it can be hard to be the lone one saying ‘no’.
Being able to say ‘no’ when you’re under pressure to go with the crowd is about self-control and self-respect. Whether it’s over drinking, drugs, or just picking on someone, it can be hard to take a stand - especially if you take it by yourself.
But here’s a few tips on taking a stand:
You don’t have to explain yourself to other people - if they don’t respect your opinion, that’s no reason to bow to theirs!
Know why you’re saying no. It’s important to be open to the advice and opinions of others, but if you aren’t clear on what you think and why, it’s easy to get confused around people who are.
Don’t give in because you lose the argument. Just say “OK, that’s your opinion, I’ve got mine.”
Being able to say ‘no’ when everyone else is saying ‘yes’ is a matter of self-respect and self-control. And remember: if you decide you’re wrong about something, you can always change your mind, but saying one thing and doing another only makes people lose respect for you.
If you stay True to you by valuing your opinions, other people will too!
