How to beat insomnia
Insomnia can be caused by any number of things, including emotional issues like anxiety and/or stress, or physical factors like nutrient or hormonal imbalances.
Environmental factors (e.g. your room’s too hot/there’s too much light), can also cause insomnia, and are often easily fixed. In short, there are many reasons people have problems sleeping, but there’s often a fixable cause. Before you can work out how to beat insomnia, you need to identify what that cause is.
Lack of sleep can affect your:
*mood
*relationships
*ability to concentrate
*energy levels
Rather than taking sleeping tablets (which are both addictive and can further reinforce bad sleeping habits) to deal with insomnia, instead explore the underlying reason it’s stopping you from getting a good night’s sleep. Getting to the root of the problem is the first step towards fixing it. Below are some basic things you can do to make sure you’re not making getting to sleep harder than it needs to be:
*Avoid caffeine in the afternoon/evening.
*Eat a meal that includes complex carbs (not ‘simple’ ones like sugar) at night, but try not to snack right before bed.
*Turn off your laptop, TV and any other electronic devices an hour before bed so your mind has time to wind down.
*Don’t work out too close to bedtime.
*Keep your sleeping space tidy and comfortable - a good sleeping environment can go a long way toward helping you feel content and relaxed.
*Try to go to bed at a similar time each night, and wake up at the same time each morning.
If you’ve tried everything in your power and are still struggling with insomnia, talk to your doctor/naturopath or therapist to see if they can help you identify its underlying cause. They’ll also be able to prescribe sleeping aids where appropriate, or natural alternatives.

I used to struggle but I have found that moving my room around, ‘redecorating’ - e.g. new duvet cover, candles, lamp- and taking out distractions really does help. Posted by 43589 "on" 11/25 "at"05:48 PM |

I used to have MAJOR sleeping issues, as a matter of fact i think i still do but they’re not as bad. I find that if work really stresses me out it gets me thinking even long before i have to get back up the next day and start all over again :(
Treatment? bath, pamper (put on facial mask), drink herbal tea, bed… REPEAT Posted by jujuberry "on" 11/24 "at"03:31 PM |

I use Scully’s Lavender sleep balm, I won some from a radio station years ago and loved it so much i’ve been buying it ever since. One little jar lasts me a year or so, so it’s very economical. A nice spray of dried lavender flowers by your bed is nice too. Posted by Bobannie "on" 10/06 "at"04:52 PM |

I sleep insomnia only being unable to get enough sleep? I get around 8-10 hours every night, and I feel like that is not enough, If it was my choice i would get 12 hours every night but as a teenager with school and work that is impossible! Posted by Ditto. "on" 05/13 "at"04:49 PM |

| This is really helpful as I have two friends that have insomnia and I feel so bad for them! I don’t know what I’d do without a good nights sleep. I always felt like I couldn’t help them but I’ll advise them to read this! Posted by MelissaW "on" 05/06 "at"04:48 PM |

A very common sleeping problem that is not really widely known about yet is called “Delayed sleep phase syndrome”. This is when you CAN sleep really really well, rather undisturbed.. but not until many hours after what is “normal”. Develops in teenage years. Essentially your body clock runs on a different time. There are ways to set this back, such as “light therapy” (which i currently do) - it’s a simple as wearing sunglasses at certain times of the day, and trying to get outside in certain hours. Retraining that body clock (also known as circadian rhythms)! It’s worth looking into if you think that it describes you! Posted by Ebby1 "on" 04/19 "at"01:18 AM |
| i can never go to sleep early or just like that no matter how hard i try -.- it really sucks, i’m always up to 2 sometimes 3, i found that if you read a good book your brain goes slow and as your lying down you will feel more relaxed and then as you read on you will start too get tired xx hope that helps Posted by ElahnnaJay_ "on" 04/11 "at"12:15 AM |
