The perfect fake tan

q:How do you get the perfect fake tan? I always seem to screw it up and it goes  streaky.

a:

First up, good on you for faking it! With all this sun around it’s easy to bake your skin to a sun-damaged crisp. But a fake tan can look just as fab, and it’s a WHOLE lot better for you!

SuntanThe perfect fake tan is all about the application process. There’s a reason different products have different application instructions, so follow them, exactly! The night before you plan to tan, get your body ready by following these two simple steps.

1. Exfoliate. Tanner sticks to dry skin and appears darker, which is why exfoliating pre tanning is so important. Knees and elbows can be particularly dry, so pay special attention to them.

2. Moisturise. Applying tanner to dehydrated skin will result in an uneven tan, so lather your bod with an intensive moisturiser until it’s silky smooth.

Then read the back of the bottle in the morning and do as it says. Streaky limbs will be a thing of the past.

Tip: Another fool proof option is going for a gradual tanner. They have minimal amounts of colour and they build intensity over time, so there’s no chance of an orange disaster.

Here’s 3 of our fave fake tanners.

1. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, $33.00
2. St. Tropez Gradual Tan for Body, $59.00
3. Model Co. Body Meringue, $55.00

I don’t really use the hard out fake tan stuff but have heard a lot of good feedback from all three of the above products listed. I usually just use a lotion tanner for the summer which gives you an even bronze glow, gradually.
