Money Smarts

As young women, we owe it to ourselves to have at least a basic understanding of things like credit, hire purchase, student loans and tax – because it’s not something we learn in school! Which is why we’ve hooked you up with Laura Tighe from SavY. She’s 24/7 Girl’s new money guru – and she’s here to dish out advice and answers to your questions.
Laura’s Summer Survival Tips
Hi girls
I only have one word for you guys – SUMMER! School and University are about to become distant memories as we get to revel in sunshine! Yus! But now we need to figure out how we can get the most out of our summer without going broke!
Tip: Be smart with your time and money – often the cheapest activities can be the best. A day at the beach is far cheaper than the movies – not to mention you’ll get a tan and some exercise!
It’s a jungle out there
First things first – we need to plan. It’s crazy the amount of things that we’re going to need to spend money on between now and the end of the holidays. We better make a list of things we’re going to need to spend on so we know how much $$ we are going to need. Make sure to include everything from xmas presents to an allowance for movies and ice creams at the beach!
Tip: Prioritise your spending! Don’t miss out on something you really want because you splurged on something that you didn’t really want the week before! This is where a diary comes in handy.
Money doesn’t grow on trees
Getting a job sounds like the last thing you’d want to do over summer. However, it’s a great way to meet new people, a good way to fill in your days, and you’ll have a lot more fun when you have more than just $10 a week from mum!

Q: Hey Laura, I really need a job for summer – but I can’t seem to get one – HELP!
A: To get a job you’re going to need to STAND OUT from the crowd. You’ll need to write a good CV ASAP. Keep it short at sweet – try to keep it to 2 pages max so you can print it double sided on one sheet of paper as employers won’t lose it this way! Also, make sure the things on your CV are relevant – ask yourself if you’d want to hear them if you were the boss. Most importantly, be confident – you need to physically go into these stores that you want to work in, talk to managers and call them to follow things up. Emailing or calling to ask for jobs simply won’t cut it this summer girls! If you can’t find any work at these stores, start reading community notice boards in supermarkets – these often have heaps of awesome casual work being advertised (especially babysitting) and the best part is not too many people read them in this digital age so you’ll have less competition! Hope this helps.
