Meet Alice Eve!
In the (guy friendly) rom com She’s Out Of My League, British actress Alice Eve plays Molly, a hot blonde with a heart of gold. An unlikely relationship develops between Molly and Kirk (Jay Baruchel), an average Joe who has his sights set low.
Sarah Illingworth caught up with Eve in New York - and found her to be as sweethearted as her onscreen character.
Q. This movie is about love - what is love to you?
A. Well, love is all consuming really. I mean, love is everything. [It’s] every cliché in the book [laughs]. I’m going to start singing the Beatles! Love is all we need?
Q. Do you have to ‘fall in love’ with a movie in order to commit to it as an actor?
A. I think that does happen. You do fall in love, with everyone and everything about the movie - unless it’s a negative experience. But I think I do fall in love with my character.
Q. In what way did you fall in love with Molly? Was there a moment, a scene where you realised, ‘wow, I really like her’?
A. I think the scene that I enjoyed was the scene that we have our first kiss, Jay and I, after the date, and we’re in the car and it felt very sweet, and [Molly] felt very sweet in it, and I think that’s the moment she fell in love with Kirk.
Q. What do you look for when you’re reading a script or considering a role?
A. Well in this movie, what I liked so much was that [Molly] felt like a traditional male lead, in that she had no foibles and she was the moneymaker and she was the successful one and she had herself together and she was the pursuer. And she knew she wanted what she wanted, and she goes after it. And that’s nice that she didn’t have to have any, sort of, female ticks, or female apologies - she was the one with a lot of power I think.
Q. Do you and Molly share any similarities?
A. I think Molly’s very honest, and I think of myself as very honest. I think that’s a very important quality to have. I believe in it, in honesty. And I think she believes in love, and I believe in love too.
Q. You come from an academic background, studying at Oxford, but this is a pretty lighthearted role. How important is culture to you as an actor?
A. I think that entertainment is cultural too. Culture is what feeds the soul, and I think that’s anything from literature to visiting a museum to watching a movie to seeing a play. Even street performers remind us that we’re human, and entertain us - and that’s vital.
Q. Do you realise that you’ve given boys that are insecure hope by playing this role?
A. Hope is a good thing. The audacity of hope!
Q. Is that important for you, that the movie has a message as well?
A. Yeah, I mean, I think the most important thing is to know that if you’re yourself, and you present yourself to another individual, then you do have a chance at love. I don’t think people are shallow - maybe they’re told to be, or conditioned to be - but people are not shallow. I have faith in people, and I think people should have faith in love.
Q. Have you ever dated someone that maybe wasn’t so beautiful?
A. I’ve never dated anyone for how they look, ever. I’ve always been - I’d have no type if you looked at pictures of all my ex boyfriends. [Laughs] ‘all’ of them! There’s no consistency of aesthetic there.
Q. Have you ever felt like, ‘he’s out of my league’?
A. Mmm - sometimes they were!
Q. What do you love about acting?
A. I like the moments that you get to act - ‘cause there’s a whole world that surrounds being an actress, but the process of losing yourself and losing your mind, and then returning back to your mind is pretty trippy.
Q. If you weren’t an actor what do you think you’d like to be?
A. I think Molly’s event planning job looks like a lot of fun - I like to write, I think [journalists] have a great job. I think there are a lot of wonderful jobs out there.
Q. What do you write?
A. Well, my boyfriend’s a poet, so I’m not a writer - ‘cause he is. I look at writing screenplays and, I haven’t got there yet, but I’m putting in my 10,000 hours, my Malcolm Gladwell hours.
Q. Who is your favourite writer?
A. Graham Greene. I love Zadie Smith at the moment too.
