Smokefree Rockquest

Dave GibsonAs well as fronting one of NZ’s biggest bands, Elemeno P, Dave Gibson is also a spokesman for thelowdown.co.nz, a website dedicated to helping young people learn about, and deal with, depression. The Lowdown are also sponsoring the Best Song award at this year’s Smokefree Rockquest (final’s on September 11, tickets available soon at Ticketek!).

Why did you get involved with thelowdown.co.nz?

Because I’ve struggled with depression and what have you for many years. The biggest barrier I found to me moving forward was information - I just didn’t have any - and the Lowdown gives you information.

Why would you recommend the site to people who are experiencing depression, or know someone who is?

It can be really liberating to know you’re not alone, to know there are other people in the same boat and that there’s actual physical things you can do to get better, or at least function better.

Aside from checking out the site, what’s your advice to people who are depressed?

Tell someone you trust [and] don’t completely believe that little voice in your head that says you suck, because lots of us hear that voice and we don’t all suck.

The Lowdown are sponsoring the Best Song award at this year’s Rockquest. What to you are key elements of a good song?

Truth is a goodie, the retelling of an actual event that happened to you or the expressing of something you really, really feel.

What’s your favourite song of all time and why?

‘Just Like Heaven’ by the Cure because it reminds me of when I first met my wife.

What are Elemeno P up to at the moment?

Milling about. Writing some new songs, playing some shows.

Any advice for bands who are just starting out?

Practice heaps, don’t take no for an answer, get used to staying up late and eating badly, listen to heaps of different kinds of music, read books - especially fiction - fall in love, fall out of love, go see the world, run down Queen St in the rain with someone you love, play heaps of shows, get a style but wear it in way before the photo shoot, listen to each other when you’re playing those shows. That’s all you need.

Dave is also the founder of Closet.co.nz, the raddest merch store ever. Especially considering it’s now home to WORDSBY, a line of tshirts created by local artists, designers and illustrators in collaboration with local songwriters. How? Each tee design is based on a lyric by a local band. Yep, awesome.
