Owl City interview
First single ‘Fireflies’ had the whole world humming along, and follow-up single, ‘Vanilla Twilight’, is equally catchy. There’s no denying Owl City, aka Adam Young, has hit the right cord, but how has he handled his fast ride to fame? We asked him a few questions about the whirlwind career that has seen him go from a nobody to a somebody in less than a year.
Q. How did it feel to play your first show as Owl City? You already had a whole lot of fans!
A. It was awkward. I was terrified. But it was fun. I had a blast.
Q. What’s it like to get famous all of a sudden?
A. It’s like sitting on the couch in your sweatpants watching late night infomercials and suddenly realizing you have enough money in the bank to buy one of those Snuggies. It makes you stand up really fast and then have to lay back down again because you got really lightheaded.
Q. How did you get signed?
A. Someone put a piece of paper with a line on it in front of me and then I found a pen on the floor and wrote my name on the line. Cake.
Q. You started out making music at home - and things blew up! What’s your advice to other people who are working on their own stuff?
A. Make the music you, as the artist and listener want to hear. Make a record you could see yourself walking into Best Buy and paying for. With real money.
Q. What do you do to psych yourself up before a show?
A. It varies from evening to evening. Last night I punched a ham and tomato sandwich across the room. It really helped everyone get into the mood. The girls screamed and the boys cheered.
Q. If you weren’t a musician what would you be doing?
A. Eating donuts and vacuuming the house to Shaquill O’Neal records.
Q. What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done to impress a girl?
A. Someone dared me to eat a soggy wet piece of pizza we found on the sidewalk after it rained outside.
Q. Did she go for it?
A. Yes. We’re engaged now.
