NYC Blog: 9/11 Anniversary
As you know doubt know, Sunday was the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. So many people lost friends, family members and colleagues - and even if they didn’t, the attacks spun the city on its head and really changed things for everyone who lives here, as well as many around the world. I joined some friends on a memorial walk around the Brooklyn waterfront, which had been organised by an interfaith organisation as a way of bringing people together and acknowledging that, though there are fundamentalists in every religion and culture, the majority of people really do want peace and equality for all.
It felt like a fitting, if low key, way to mark the day, and to remember those who lost their lives in the attacks - and in the wars that followed. For me, it was also a poignant reminder that in some countries war and the threat of terrorism is a daily reality, and that I’m pretty lucky to come from a country like New Zealand where peace is a priority, and war a last resort!
