NYC Blog: Occupy Wall St part 2

NYC Blog: Occupy Wall St part 2

This past week has seen the Occupy Wall St movement ramp up another notch. It’s been just over a month since the protest started, and there are now 100 occupations around the US, and 1500 (1500!) worldwide, including in New Zealand. It’s so exciting to see people all around the world ‘occupying’ areas in their towns, protesting the commercialisation of.. pretty much everything in our lives. I’m really hoping this movement will create a true shift in the global psyche, and prove to governments around the world that people are over being advertised and marketed to, rather than governed. With elections coming up in New Zealand and the US, I think it’s crucial for people to keep voicing their opinions and needs. There needs to be a greater level of transparency in the political process, and an end to the election-process-as-entertainment trend in particular. Instead of wasting your and everyone else’s time trying to make your opponents look bad, please Mr Politician put your energy into developing solid policies that benefit the population as a whole, and providing solutions to the (rather serious) issues the world is facing at the moment.

Democracy in its current form hasn’t been working for us for ages, and I think our generation has finally had enough. There’s been a bit of mockery about the fact Occupy protesters don’t have a clear list of demands, but I think whoever isn’t taking the movement seriously is the real subject of the joke. Occupy Wall St/everywhere isn’t about a shortlist of demands (at this stage), it’s a massive worldwide response to a really long period of poor government across the globe. The world is letting its leaders know they aren’t going to turn a blind eye and hope for the best anymore - at this point, if government don’t govern with transparency and accountability, populations are going to react with more determination than ever. At this point, in our parts at least, the reaction has been nonviolent but that isn’t the case in a number of other countries. Yes, the Occupy movement has a very broad spectrum of grievances, and is still whittling away at a specific list of demands, but the important thing about this movement is the sheer number of people around the world that are frustrated and angry and dissatisfied with the way they’re being governed. Politicians who ignore this or shrug it off as a shortlived ‘hippy-run’ thing are shooting themselves in the foot. And, while I’m at it, why bother being a politician if you aren’t interested in what your people need or ask for anyway?!
