Feeling self conscious
I’m 16, nearly 17, and I think i’m ready to have sex. The only problem is I’m so self conscious of down below that I don’t want my boyfriend to see it. I know that it’s silly and immature, but I can’t help the way I feel. I don’t know what I’m meant to do. Whether I shave it or leave it? I just want to be able to be confident about my body, but it’s easier said than done. Any suggestions?
Body issues are completely normal… and lets face it, genitals are seriously odd-looking. There’s a reason people call it “bumping uglies”. What you have to keep in mind is that yes, it is strange-looking, but I can say with some certainty that yours is no uglier than anyone else’s.
Get to know it
If you want to get a bit more confident about it then why not get to know it? Grab a mirror and a textbook and actually figure out what you are looking at. It seems odd, but by actually sitting down and figuring out what’s what, you’ll realise that yours is just like every other girl’s out there. And when you have that textbook out look for the paragraph that describes the amount of variation found in womens genitals, and how it’s completely normal for no two vaginas to look the same.
Different strokes for different folks
As far as shaving it or leaving it natural… do what feels comfortable to you. Some girls like to go and get their bikini-line waxed, others tend to just trim their hair to make it a little more controlled. Some even go as far as getting rid of everything!!! The fact is, at your age, the majority of girls are just leaving it natural. And between you and me, guys really don’t care that much anyway.
Trust each other
Being nervous about anything can really ruin your first time, and it can be hard to let someone else see you naked. Remember that you love him, and he loves you – so you’re going to have to trust each other to not giggle and ruin the mood! Sarah xx
