I’m not developing as fast as my friends

q:I’m 15 and I started getting my period at 14. It’s been about a year now but I haven’t started growing. My friends have all shot up and grown boobs, I’ve stayed the same height and my boobs are still very small, which can be embarrassing. My dad is very tall and my mum has large boobs so it’s strange that I’m the opposite. When will I start growing? Is there anything I can do to start it?

a:Puberty is a strange thing. What’s normal for one person can be completely different for someone else. You might just be late in getting your growth spurt. The onset of the different facets of puberty are affected by lots of things, like hormones, nutrition, environment, race, genetics… even the type of people you hang out with (seriously! Studies have shown that girls who hang around guys more go through puberty earlier). At any rate, one year is nothing to worry about. Puberty can take years to get through and many changes carry on into your 20s!

You won’t all be the same
You may not get different physical characteristics in the same order that your friends did either. For example, you got your period first and may get your growth spurt last, but your best friend may not get her period until she’s 18! It happens! If it’s really bothering you I suggest you talk to your doctor about it. Only your doctor can tell you if there is actually something wrong, and it’s always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. Sarah xx
