Interview With Michelle Ang

Interview With Michelle Ang

You might remember New York based Kiwi actor Michelle Ang best as Tai-San from the hit TV series The Tribe, but with the release of her new movie My Wedding And Other Secrets, a starring role in Hollywood blockbuster Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and a number of other exciting international projects on the boil it looks like Michelle’s about to take the movie world by storm!

How did you start out as an actor?
I sort of fell into it. I always had a love of performance on stage and did a lot of theatre at school. But really I started off as a dancer, training and dancing with the Royal New Zealand Ballet in their productions and then as a television performer on Young Entertainers. From there I managed to get an agent and start acting in television series’.

How did you end up in New York?
After an uninspiring year in Los Angeles during the writer’s strike I packed up my bags and went backpacking for a while. An idyllic summer in Barcelona got me thinking that I hadn’t explored the rest of the States. New York seemed like the next most exciting, arts fuelled city. No matter that I knew no one there!

Your new movie, My Wedding And Other Secrets, has been getting a great response! What other projects have you been working on recently?
Thanks! Yeah, that was a project that really resonated with me so it’s fulfilling to see that the audiences are connecting with it too. I have a short film I shot in New York called The Potential Wives Of Norman Mao that is a sumptuous, quirky Wes Anderson-esque film. I also worked as a director on a friend’s music video, which involved giant props and locations around my neighbourhood - Williamsburg. I am currently in development on a one-woman theatre show too.

What was it like working on a blockbuster like Big Mommas?
It was unlike any other project. It was the largest scale production I’ve worked on, and with that came new methods of filming and also set etiquette etc. We shot in Atlanta, Georgia so being away from home was interesting. Thankfully the young cast bonded well - they put us all up at the same hotel. Having a star like Martin Lawrence changed dynamics too. Overall everything was just much bigger - sets, budgets, personalities, locations etc.

What advice would you give actors hoping to make it internationally?
Don’t give up. Give yourself time to reestablish yourself in new territories, but don’t lose confidence in your skills. That and ensure you have a great representation team that you trust.

My Wedding And Other Secrets is out now - watch the trailer below!

Michelle was interviewed by Sarah Illingworth in NYC. Who is Sarah? Find out here and meet the rest of the 24/7 Girl team too. And don’t forget to check out Sarah’s blog here!
