Beam at Aotea Square
So Auckland weather’s not exactly summertime awesome at the moment (listening to the pouring rain outside I realise this is the understatement of the year!), but if things do clear up in the last week and a half before Christmas I highly recommend checking out Beam, a free light show in Aotea Square that runs until Christmas Eve.
Starting at 9pm every night until December 24, the show comprises eight moving searchlights that create light patterns across the night sky, accompanied by a soundtrack mixed by 95bFM’s Stinky Jim, which features a bunch of Auckland artists from the Round Trip Mars label, including SJD, Scratch 22, Phelps & Munro and Jefferson Belt. Get down there, pick up a taco or two from Mexi Kai and kick back on one of the deck chairs in the square to enjoy your own little magical light show. If you can’t make it into the city, get somewhere with a good view of it and load up the soundtrack here. Genius!
Also worth checking out are the Christmas Markets, which are also being held in Aotea Square until Saturday December 24. With everything from artisan foods, Christmas wreaths, baking, preserves, gifts, decorations and Christmas trees on offer there’s something for everyone! Click here for more info.
