Ego boost!

Ego boostShe’s Out Of My League follows the budding relationship between Kirk, an awkard, geeky lookin’ dude who works at the airport, and Molly - a drop dead gorgeous bombshell who Kirk’s buddy Stainer rates a ‘hard 10’ on his scale of one to hot. Kirk gets a five.

Stainer is certain Molly’s totally out of Kirk’s league, but to Molly the only thing holding their relationship back is Kirk’s lack of self confidence.

Kirk almost misses out on the girl of his dreams because he doesn’t think he deserves her. It’s a moral we’ve all heard before, but it’s a good reminder: often, we’re the only ones who don’t think we’re good enough!

The quandry

For some reason many of us struggle to approve of ourselves. It might have something to do with the fact that, growing up, a lot of us learn that it’s wrong to be too confident, that being sure of ourselves is a negative thing.

Whether it comes from family or society, we learn to equate confidence with arrogance, when in reality they’re two very different things. Trying to be humble, we downplay our strong points - but all this does is limit us.

Marianne Williamson hit it on the head when she wrote the following:

“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you…As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

It’s hard to fulfill your potential when you don’t believe in yourself. And when we don’t fulfill our potential, we aren’t the only ones who miss out!

Value yourself and others will too

The point isn’t to become a braggaholic who can’t stop talking about themselves, but to develop a sense of self confidence that will enable you to fulfill your potential in every area of your life. Here are some other reasons it’s GOOD to value yourself!

- If you value yourself other people will too.

- Talking negatively about yourself creates a negative environment.

- By exercising and developing your strengths you make life better for the people you share it with.

When asked if he’s ever dated someone who was out of his league, Jay Baruchel (the guy who plays Kirk), answered, “I s’pose to other people - yeah, I’ve definitely gone out with girls that were out of my league, but I guess the way I got them is I never thought that they were out of my league.”

Again: sometimes we’re the only ones who don’t think we’re good enough. Don’t let insecurity hold you back!
