Holistic Health Tips

RelaxIt’s easy to head to the medicine cabinet when illness hits, but there are many drug free ways to stay healthy! Here are some simple holistic tips that’ll help you keep the winter blues (and bugs!) at bay.

Address emotional issues, get to the core.
It’s easy to underestimate the impact of our emotions on our physical health - but the reality is, when we’re stressed or down, our health suffers. Low times are unavoidable, but if you’re consistently affected by depression or anxiety, address it! We tend to have a distorted perspective on life when we’re in a bad headspace, but talking to someone objective, like a doctor or therapist, can help to identify the root of the problem, and your overall health will benefit.

Eat quality foods, and a balanced diet.
What we eat directly affects our physical health, as well as our mood (no surprises there!). Generally, a balanced diet that includes wholegrains and fresh fruit and vegies, as well as appropriate levels of calcium, protein and the right kind of fats etc. is what our bodies need to function at their best. It’s important to be aware of any deficiencies, intolerances and/or allergies and adapt your diet and lifestyle to suit - if you want to feel great that is!

There is also evidence to suggest eating foods that are in season has a positive effect on our health!

Sleep. Relax.
For some reason it’s become a guilty pleasure to take time out for yourself, but there’s nothing better for the soul than a little r&r - whatever that looks like to you! Whether it’s watching a movie, reading a book or taking a long, hot bath, consistently giving yourself time to unwind is some of the best medicine you could invest in. Getting enough sleep is also hugely important! Our bodies benefit from a consistent sleep schedule, so do your best to go to bed at the same time each night, and to wake at the same time each day.

Exercise.
Not only is it great for our physical health, working out is a great way to relieve stress and boost your mood. By incorporating physical activity into your daily routine, whether it be yoga, swimming or a daily jog, you’ll be doing yourself a huge favour - body, mind and soul!

Get out!
Vitamin D is really important to our health, but a lot of people are deficient. Our bodies produce Vitamin D in response to direct exposure to the sun, and even a short amount of time in the sun each day will improve your Vitamin D levels (i.e. no need to bake for an hour!). Among other things, our bodies need Vitamin D to absorb calcium, and deficiency can lead to a whole host of health problems. Of course, there are many other reasons why getting out and about is good for us - so try not to hole up too much this winter!
