I’ll be happy when…
It’s amazing how often we pin our happiness on something or someone - our happiness all depends on whether something outside of ourselves happens to make us feel good. We end up with a list of reasons we can’t be happy ‘until…’
Waiting to be happy is a total trap though - there will always be something that could bring us down if we let it!
It’s a long wait.
Whether it’s waiting to meet the perfect guy, buy a new wardrobe, lose some weight or have someone apologise for something they did that hurt you - waiting ‘until…’ to be happy can mean you end up waiting quite a while. Sometimes, the things we think are going to make us happy don’t… or we get them and immediately think we need something ELSE to be happy. It’s hard to be content in a world that constantly tells us we need more, but it’s possible!
When our happiness is dependent on people/things outside ourselves we set ourselves up for disappointment. Here are some reasons why:
a) us humans tend to let each other down - without even meaning to.
b) we end up looking for other people to ‘fix’ us, instead of taking responsibility for our own hurts.
c) often, as soon as we get what we want - we immediately want something else!
Of course, people and things and experiences can bring a whole lot of happiness - and they can bring sadness too. If we decide to look for the good in every person and situation, bad things can happen but we’ll still be able to keep our head up.It’s like a house in a storm: if it’s has a good foundation, it’ll stay standing a lot longer than a house that hasn’t been built well. In the same way, happiness that depends on other people won’t last when they let us down.
Tip: learning to be happy in our own skin means we can be positive no matter what’s happening around us.
A little cheese on top.
Don’t wait ‘til you find the perfect guy or buy those new clothes to be happy - choose to be happy right now! Try writing a list of 10 things you like about your life as it is… and when that little voice pops up to tell you all the reasons you can’t enjoy life, pull out the list and prove it wrong.
Remember: there will always be new challenges to face - choose to see them as an opportunity, not a barrier!
Best of the rest
