How to choose the best acne-treating ingredients

24/7 Girl Vintage article

Skincare ingredientsLooking at the ingredients label on your skin care products is a bit like reading the periodic table for the first time – a totally confusing experience! But, all of those long, hard to pronounce words play their part in keeping your skin clean and clear, and some of them are going to be better suited to your skin type than others. So, we’ve put together the What, How and Who guide of some common skincare ingredients, just for you!

What: Salicylic Acid

How: Helps exfoliate the skin and prevent pores clogging up. It also has antiseptic properties to help heal spots quicker.

Who: The girl who’s always got a few spots

What: Benzoyl Peroxide

How: Treats spots by reducing bacteria and yeast on the skins surface. Also reduces the number of ‘comedones’ (aka blackheads and whiteheads). Take care with products containing this though as it can cause irritations if your skin is sensitive).

Who: The oily skin girl

What: Menthol

How: Soothes and heals skin

Who: The sensitive skin girl

Here’s a few more words you might have seen around….

Comedogenic - Contains ingredients that can clog pores and cause spots.

Noncomedogenic – Is free from ingredients that can clog pores.

Micro Dermabrasion – Used to help with acne scarring, skin pigmentation and congestion by removing a layer of skin through exfoliation.

Microbeads - Break down dirt, oil and dead skin cells trapped in your pores.

Anti-Oxidant – Found in fruit and veges and skincare products containing vitamins A, C and E, antioxidants help protect your skin from free radicals which can do some pretty nasty things, like causing cancer and premature ageing.

Myth: If my skin is super oily I shouldn’t use moisturiser.

False! No, definitely don’t skip the moisturiser! Moisturising your skin regularly is an essential part of every skincare regime, no matter what your skin type. The best thing for reducing oil is using oil-free and mattifying products that have been formulated specially for people with oily skin.
