Book Review: Jekel loves Hyde

Jekyll and HydeAuthor: Beth Fantaskey

As soon as you read the title you can guess what this novel is about. But Beth Fantaskey brings us a modern day, teenage take on the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde story, and it’s only loosely based on the original.

After Jill Jekel’s father is brutally murdered in their Volvo, everyone but Tristian Hyde is afraid of what to say. Jill has always noticed Tristian, but he hasn’t noticed her. She is a ‘goody-two-shoes’, and he is handsome and popular. But when there paths cross due to a science competition with a $30,000 prize, they discover there are very similar skeletons in their closets. A box that Jill’s father left behind shows she is a direct descendant of Dr Jekyll, and Tristian from Mr Hyde. The two set out to recreate experiments inspired by the famous novel, and as things start heating up in the lab, Jekel falls in love with Hyde.

Though the story is a little slow starting, it soon gathers a momentum that makes it very hard to put down. There are lots of twists and turns as the plot plows steadily forward, collecting Tristan and Jill in an exciting web of danger and romance.
