Why are yawns contagious?
Ever been bored stiff in class and cranked out a yawn only to watch everyone else yawn after you! Today’s question is – why are yawns contagious?
Firstly let’s get rid of all the myths…The theory that yawns happen to get more oxygen to the brain – isn’t true! The theory that yawning dates back to our ancestors who yawned to show their teeth to intimidate others! – is definitely not true! Finally the boredom theory – that we yawn because we’re fatigued or uninterested.
In fact we humans actually mimic yawns unknowingly! Research shows that a yawn epidemic happens because we feel “a state of metal empathy”. In normal people terms – we yawn when others yawn because we can relate to how tired they are! What a pack of copy cats…
I bet you even yawned reading about yawns – didn’t you?!?
