10 workouts for the holidays
How many of us have got sneezes, sniffles or are just feeling downright sorry for ourselves?
At this time of the year it’s easy to come up with 100 good reasons NOT to venture outside or to leave that run/swim/gym/
bike ride to another day (month/year). But just because it’s cold, you don’t have to abandon exercise.
3 reasons why it’s important to keep active through winter
1. Keeps your body in shape. It’s obvious, but although we might be piling on the layers and eating more, keeping active will help you keep in shape.
2. Keeps your mind in shape. Exercise works wonders for the mood. Evidence shows that even a moderate amount of exercise on a regular basis can reduce anxiety and depression. All those kick-ass endorphins are released and make you feel lighter and happier.
3. Winter will pass. Hard to imagine right now, but the beach season will be back before we know it! Swimsuits, shorts, minis…. enough said!
10 school holiday workouts
The trick to staying motivated is to do things that are fun, earn you money or you can do with friends. We’ve put together 10 ideas to help girls stay active these holidays.
Try it – you’ll find it improves your mood, increases your energy level and helps you sleep better. And you’ll be in better shape when the weather warms up!
1. Ice skating. Wrap up and head to the skating rink for a real aerobic work out. If you’re a beginner, don’t worry, you’ll pick it up in the first hour.
2. Vacuuming/cleaning cleaner. These are both great workouts and will score major brownie points with your Mum or Dad (or a few extra dollars if you’re smart)
3. Rollerblading. Grab your old rollerblades and a couple of friends (or head out and hire some). It’s a great workout for arms, legs – and it gets your blood pumping!
4. Weights watching. TV, that is. Tins of food make great weights so grab a couple of cans, pump up the music, stick on a DVD and invent your own gym workout (in the privacy of your own room!)
5. Swimming. There’s nothing like the feeling of water in the middle of winter. So head for your nearest indoor pool, strip off and dive in. Get a group of guys and girls together for a friendly game of water polo!
6. Take up jogging/power walking. If you need a destination, head to the nearest mall. You’ll have earnt a bit of retail therapy by the time you get there.
7. Dust off the bike. Cycling’s become ultra cool again so dust off your old BMX or mountain bike and get those legs pumping. Even Sarah Ulmer had to start somewhere.
8. Kick butt. Why wait till summer? Most experts agree, nothing compares to the good old-fashioned squat for toning up a butt.
9. Holiday phone marathon. If you’re a real chatterbox and you’ve got a cordless, walk around the house while you chat. Every minute you walk burns 4 – 6 calories! Or do some stretches to keep warm and supple (check out our fave stretches here).
10. Release the inner child! Head off to the local playground with mates. Flying Fox, swings, spinning wheel, see saws –they all work different parts of your body. Walk or bike there and back for a bit of an extra workout!
