Can you lose weight without exercising?
Q. “Can you lose weight without exercising?”
A. Unfortunately, unless we make an effort to keep active, our body isn’t able to function as it should.
It isn’t all about losing weight either, but about maintaining a healthy weight - a combination of healthy eating and regular exercise will help you do this naturally.
If you’re not using as many calories as you’re consuming each day, your body will store the excess as fat. By eating a healthy diet, and keeping active, you’ll keep your weight down and your body will feel healthier too! Exercise can also affect your metabolism, meaning you’ll burn kilojoules faster, and it improves your general health as well. Try not to think in terms of ‘weight loss’ all the time, but make healthy choices, and your body will find it’s natural equilibrium.
Q. “My mum tells me I exercise too much, but I like it. Is there actually a limit to how much exercise you should do?”
A. While it’s great you’re so active it is possible to overdo it. Everyone has different limits when it comes to exercise, so if you (or your mum!) are worried you’re pushing yourself too hard, try to get an objective opinion.
Here are some signs you might need to take it easy:
- achy/painful joints and/or muscles
- dizziness or a ‘compulsive’ need to exercise (i.e. you can’t stop yourself, or get upset if you can’t exercise).
It’s also important to fuel your body well, and give it a chance to rest after exercise, so it can repair any damage that’s been done. Try exercising different parts of your body on different days, and/or take a couple of ‘rest’ days each week.
Best of the rest
